Hiring Assistant Manager

The function of the assistant store manager is to support the owner/manager in the daily operations and functions of a retail store. Your role is to organize and assist in running our store by assisting in supervising employees, working with customers, and helping carry out the directives of the manager and owner. You will ensure that you model exceptional service at all times and that store personnel provide exceptional customer service and are meeting the mandates of providing superior service geared to providing all the information necessary for pet guardians to make informed decisions and choices.  

Your job will be highly important in ensuring the team meets its goals and efficiency. 

Responsibilities

  • Planning team training meetings once a month with Representatives or on subjects that require more attention in the workplace 
  • Ensuring that the price changes are checked every month. 
  • Ensuring that the coupons/gift cards/returns are filed correctly weekly/monthly. 
  • You will learn to prepare orders for the Manager. 
  • You will be responsible for drafting new procedures for the store 
  • Assist the General Manager as directed
  • Manage employees in daily tasks
  • Assist in Training employees and new hires
  • Manage the online store. 
  • Develop good customer relationships and address customer service needs
  • Develop strategies for better workplace efficiency and goal achievement
  • Liaise between managers, customers and employees
  • Serve as acting General Manager (GM) when GM is away
  • Assist the Retail Store Manager in planning and implementing strategies to attract customers
  • Track the progress of weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual objectives
  • Monitor and maintain store inventory
  • Evaluate employee performance and identify hiring and training needs
  • Supervise and motivate staff to perform their best
  • Coach and support new and existing Sales Associates
  • Communicate with clients and evaluate their needs
  • Analyze consumer behavior and adjust product positioning
  • Handle complaints from customers
  • Research emerging products and use the information to update the store’s merchandise and communicate with team members
  • Conduct regular audits to ensure the store is functional and presentable
  • Make sure all employees adhere to the company’s policies and guidelines
  • Act as our store’s representative and set an example for our staff

NOTE:  As this role is a newly added position – duties may be added and/or deleted (at management's discretion) as we continue to develop the standards.

Requirements/Expectations

  •  Attention to detail. 
  • Your ability to get the facts right are key to supporting management. This can go for remembering a colleague’s birthday, a loyal customer’s face, and on to include special orders and maintenance issues. You must have the qualifications to be able to filter your boss' needs and bring important details to their attention while also handling the smaller things that often fill their plate.


  • Ability to make decisions.
  • A great Assistant Manager has good problem-solving skills so they are able to think through choices and then deliver them to the manager. If there are customer complaints or concerns, a good assistant will offer two choices to the manager instead of asking, “What do you want me to do?” You support management, not just relay issue after issue to them expecting them to fix it all. Understand what responsibilities you have been given authority over and carry them out. On the other hand, help the manager select the best alternative on decisions you don’t have authority over.

  • Ability to connect with the customer. 
  • The best assistants connect with customers because they can read them well. The assistant manager who can read body posture and tone of voice and adjust accordingly will be invaluable. You as the assistant should also be able to model the best sales process to not just help shoppers but to convert them into customers of your merchandise. In some ways, the assistant manager should be the best salesperson on the sales floor.

  • Ability to be a second set of eyes...and ears. 
  • A store manager needs to have another person who can examine something like an employee performance issue, a customer complaint, or an inventory problem but not in a tattletale way. You are on the sales floor but you are more than just a sales associate. Your retail shop assistant skills mean you can take the information you see and hear, look for trends diminishing the customer experience, and then look at ways to fix them – either by yourself or with your manager.

  • Ability to sell. 
  • As an assistant manager, you will still want to connect with your customers and model exceptional customer service. You must be able to assist customers and make the sale because of your interpersonal skills, experience and growing knowledge/educational base. 

  • Be a running buddy.
  • Our team needs a running buddy to cheer us on, run alongside us, and keep pushing us to do our best. Your main goal as an assistant manager is to be a running buddy with the manager; be someone they can make a plan with, someone who encourages them, and someone they can trust to support them at all times.

    As a team, you and your store manager should be able to continue to grow the customer base and sales, manage inventory and labor, keep up with the latest merchandising trends, and do it all with a smile while working in a brick-and-mortar retail store.
